Autumn Street Photography in London — Foto App Walk and the First 5AM Club
October was London-focused — two photowalks bookending the month, and a lot of time wandering familiar streets looking for new angles.
The first walk came at the end of September, organised through the Foto App — a relaxed lunchtime wander that started on Oxford Street and worked its way through Soho, Chinatown, and Covent Garden before finishing at Trafalgar Square. Lunchtime photography in London has its own particular energy: crowds, colour, and movement everywhere. The challenge is finding the quiet moment within the noise.
October closed with something very different — the inaugural 5AM Photo Club walk, covering much of the same ground but at a completely different hour. Oxford Circus at 5 in the morning is a different world. Empty pavements, golden streetlights, the odd delivery van. Carnaby Street without the shoppers. Trafalgar Square with just the pigeons and a handful of other photographers.
The contrast between the two walks — same route, completely different mood — was a good reminder that timing in photography isn't just about the technical quality of light. It changes everything about what a place feels like.
